Company Description: Erie Indemnity Co. was founded as a Pennsylvania auto insurer in 1925 by H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford. The company operates as the management services company that provides sales, underwriting and policy issuance services to the policyholders of Erie Insurance Exchange. Exchange is a reciprocal insurance exchange, which is an unincorporated association of individuals, partnerships and corporations that agree to insure one another. Erie also operates as a property and casualty insurer through three wholly-owned subsidiaries, Erie Insurance Company, Erie Insurance Property and Casualty Company and Erie Insurance Company of New York. The company made the leap into a true multi-line insurance company in 1961, when it introduced its first homeowners insurance policy, the Pioneer HomeProtector program. Erie has three reportable segments: management operations, insurance underwriting operations and investment operations. More than 2,000 agencies represent Erie Insurance. The company has operations in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
