Locked-in syndrome is a rare neurological disorder characterized by complete or nearly complete paralysis of voluntary muscles in all parts of the body except for those of the muscles of the upper face and those that control eye movement. It may result from riding a motorcycle into a bridge abutment; a drunken dive from a Mexican balcony during spring break; nasty diseases that destroy the fatty, myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers; an overdose of poisons or medicine; or a deep-brain stroke. It should not be wished on the worst of enemies. It leaves the unfortunate few (or maybe not so few) who experience it unable to move and unable to speak--completely mute and paralyzed. People who are locked-in are fully conscious and can think, reason, imagine, dream, and have full tacit command of the language system they learned. But they cannot move or speak.
