Two pieces have drawn our immediate attention: Leo Haber's notes on "To Publish or Not to Publish" for its clear, firm expression of policy and Haim Chertok's "Report from Israel ..." in Midstream's January/February 2008 issue.

Having just returned from Israel--one of us for the third visit in four months--we wish to commend you for publishing Prof. Chertok's candid and sobering assessment of much of Israel's state at this serious moment in its history. Those of us who are devoted to Israel's survival and its founding values--now endangered--must be attentive to this important essay. Prof. Chertok speaks from deep caring and concern as do many Israeli citizens of every social level with whom we met.

Thank you for providing necessary illumination on vital, troubling issues.
