Article Excerpt Sperm Counts: Overcome by Man's Most Precious Fluid. By Lisa Jean Moore. New York: New York University Press, 2007, 203 pages. Hardcover, $26.95.
Sperm Counts is the first volume in a new series from NYU Press, Intersections, described as "transdisciplinary perspectives on genders and sexualities." Ten years in the making, Lisa Jean Moore's study of sperm and semen is a result of her previous employment at a sperm bank, sociological interests, and personal interaction with this "most precious fluid" that she and her partner needed to start a family:
Our oldest daughter was conceived through a known donor during an at-home intracervical insemination. My partner used a syringe to place semen close to my cervix during peak ovulation. I still remember the first time she sucked up semen into a syringe and grimaced. "This stuff smells gross." (p. 4)
While her sexual orientation may allow a different perspective than a heterosexual researcher, there is the presence of inevitable bias because of sperm's apparent power: gay, straight, transgender, or asexual, sperm is a necessary component for reproduction and keeping the human race intact. Those who may be disenchanted by the fluid and the gender it represents are, nevertheless and without an alternative, reliant on it. Sperm does count, which is the word play of the book's title, and the stuff has the agency to "overcome" those who may not want anything to do with it. Moore notes, "Our culture is fascinated by sperm"...
