Sticking it to the fans

Is Bob Welch the only person who is looking out for University of Oregon sports fans? Welch's Jan. 18 column was right on target.

Generally, I have no problem with what President Dave Frohnmayer, Athletic Director Pat Kilkenny and head football coach Mike Bellotti (and men's basketball coach Ernie Kent et al.) have done for the Ducks sports emporium - except maybe where the students have been relegated for seating in Autzen Stadium. But the scheduling of the Civil War next year is a little much.

The bottom line is the game, the players and the fans. The game is the Civil War, and should be a feature for the two universities - rather than pandering to a sports promotion conglomerate.

Need anything more be said?

The players playing and students going to a game during dead week should be a no-no. Sports are important, but education is what it should be all about.

And the fans - well, they are an important ingredient to a sports event and should be entitled to everything that goes on for any other football game or other sports event.

Kil kenny says getting more money for the bulging sports money coffers "became an opportunity of unprecedented proportions," which must be another way of saying it's OK to stick it to the fans.

Get ready. If this is allowed to go through, there's got to be a bigger, better deal out there that will be...
