Uncertain where and not settled on the exact when either, the Oregon baseball team will resume practices Monday after its winter break, knowing the season's first game is only 15 workouts and 18 days after that first gathering.
"I'm really looking forward to getting out of the office," UO coach George Horton said as he previewed his team with the media. "I'm just about to get to start doing something that some people think I do fairly well.
"I'm looking forward to being a baseball coach."
Much of Horton's time in recent weeks has been spent as an administrator and organizer, along with public speaker and promoter. It's that way with a program that is being rebuilt from scratch after the university went 28 years without varsity baseball.
If it hasn't been one issue to resolve, it's been another detail to make sure is taken care of, if not by himself, by one of his assistants.
Lately, a primary question has been where the Ducks could conduct their individual workouts, in anticipation of Monday's first official practice. Where that will be held is in question, too, with construction ongoing at PK Park, Oregon's new baseball facility adjacent to Autzen Stadium.
"We've spent more time with where and when we're going to practice than what we're doing at practice," Horton said. "That's been a major obstacle."...
