Next week is the first anniversary of my father's death from cancer. It's brought up painful feelings that make it a struggle to take dance class or even get out of bed. I know dancers should be strong. Why can't I put my personal problems behind me?

Dancers have feelings just like everyone else. You may worry you're being weak if you acknowledge emotional or physical pain. That unrealistic way of thinking will leave you without the resources to cope with losses--whether it's being injured and unable to dance or letting go of a loved one. Losing a parent is one of life's most difficult experiences. It's normal to grieve and feel a resurgence of loss around anniversaries. Rather than questioning your feelings, you need to ask yourself how to help yourself. Talking to others can be comforting....
