Ryan Howland, a senior at the Lyndon Institute in Burlington, Vermont, remembers the day his team won the regional level of the Vermont Drama Council One-Act Play Festival. "It felt really great," he tells Choices. "We didn't know we'd won until we were all on the bus, ready to leave. When our coach, Ms. Galligan, opened the envelope and told us we won, we were all so excited!"

About a month later, the team took its play to the state-level festival. If the students could make it past this round, they would perform their one-act play against the best high school theater troupes in New England. This was the first time in many years that the Lyndon Institute had a team in the festival, and stress levels were running high.
"As much fun as it was, it was really tense and nerve-racking," says Ryan's teammate Eden Berube. "If it's close to the time that you perform, you're criticizing your every move. When I'm doing regular plays, a lot of times I'll be on stage and recognize that I've messed up, but people won't notice it if you don't show it. But with competitions, you have more people who are critical. The situation is much more intense."
