Each recipient can decide

My heart goes out to the nearly 18,000 people who are unemployed in Lane County. We have seen high unemployment here before, but I certainly don't remember a time when jobs were taken away at the pace and scope that has occurred in recent months.

I applaud the Eugene Water & Electric Board for wanting to do something, and also for wanting to get some relief into the local economy as quickly as possible. Brian Palmer (letters, Jan. 27) noted that in the hands of many, "$30 won't mean much." I agree, but I also realize that to the people who need it, $30 will have at least some small positive effect.

For those of us who do not need the money, let us count our blessings and do something positive with this small rebate. I challenge each of us to give it up. I challenge EWEB to give us an option to apply the money directly to Energy Share, where it will be available to those who really do need a helping hand with their EWEB bill.

If Energy Share isn't your cup of tea but you would like to do something other than "buy pizza for the kids and beer for me," I am sure that we can each find an appropriate charity - maybe even "the guy at the intersection."
