Total operations at Eugene Airport, including airlines, charter flights and private planes, were down 5.95 percent in 2008 compared with 2007. And the number of total passengers were down 5.14 percent. But airport officials aren't disappointed.

On the contrary, "We're actually pretty happy with that," said Cathryn Stephens, director of marketing and public relations at the Eugene Airport.

Air traffic, measured in miles flown by paying passengers, slid 2.3 percent for the seven biggest U.S. airlines in 2008. The last time air traffic decreased was in 2002, after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks....
