PLEASANT HILL - Barn fires. Mill fires. Countless house fires. Small-plane disasters. Cow and horse carcasses on the highway. A decomposing cow buried in manure. And the old man in the tour bus crash crying for his lost "medicine."

"His medicine was a fifth," retiring Fire Chief Lyle Payne recalls.

In 41 years and two months with the Pleasant Hill Rural Fire Protection District - the last 18 as chief - the 66-year-old Payne has surely seen it all.

He's gone from one of the district's first volunteers in 1967 to only the second chief in the district's history. During that time, the district grew from having one truck - a loaner all the way from Cornelius, housed "in a guy's garage, down there on Bristow (Road)," Payne says - to include two stations and eight trucks.
