Recent studies are calling increasing attention to the potential dangers of bisphenol A (BPA), a common chemical that makes polycarbonate plastics clear and hard. Many such plastics are used in water and baby bottles, cans, and medical devices. In particular, an FDA subcommittee of scientists has criticized as inadequate the agency's earlier assessment of BPA hazards.

The FDA last summer released a draft assessment of BPA in food-contact applications--that is, in items that food comes in contact with. The agency determined that a safe level of exposure in humans was 5 milligrams per kilogram of bodyweight per day (kg/day). It estimated that typical food-contact exposure for infants and adults is 2.42 micrograms/kg/day and 0.185 micrograms/ kg/day, respectively.
