A landlord's gift of love

I have a newly married granddaughter who received a gift of love from her landlord.

Her landlord approached her and told her that she did not owe any rent for December. Her husband is one of the recently laid off employees of a major company. The landlord did not stop at that gift, but enhanced it by telling her that her rent would be reduced by $150 per month.

That is a true spirit of giving from someone who may not afford much but is willing to give more.

Apartments alter neighborhood

Dan Neal is building student housing at 19th Avenue and Kincaid Street in Eugene. His four-story building has six units, 27 bedrooms and five on-site parking places. As part of the Minor Code Amendment Process, the City Council required an increase in parking from five to 13 spaces.

Neal found a building code loophole that allows him to rent eight spaces from a neighbor, satisfying the parking requirement without making design changes to his building. The intent of amendment process was to add 13 new parking spaces to the neighborhood, not rent another building's spaces, thereby displacing eight cars into the neighborhood.

Three new student apartment buildings are being built along two blocks of East 19th Avenue, with 179 bedrooms and 38 new parking spaces. Studies show 72 percent of students bring cars to school. Where will these additional 91 cars park?
