A case can be made that, for the Oregon football team this fall, the loss of a fifth-round NFL draft pick was a bigger deal than the loss of the 13th overall piwck of the first round.
Sounds odd, sure. But consider the circumstances. It took three-quarters of the season before the Ducks were getting quarterback play like that provided last fall by Dennis Dixon, who was a fifth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in April.
On the other hand: For all the talents of Jonathan Stewart, the 13th overall pick by the Carolina Panthers earlier this year, his role has been filled capably. Jeremiah Johnson saw to that by stepping out of Stewart's shadow - gingerly at first, after last year's knee injury - and running for 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. LeGarrette Blount also has a chance to surpass 1,000 yards with a good showing in the Holiday Bowl on Tuesday, joining a line of successful JC transfers for Oregon at running back that includes Saladin McCullough, Reuben Droughns and Maurice Morris.
