When Swanson Group, a wood products company based near Grants Pass, bought McKenzie Forest Products' Springfield plywood mill last year, Swanson's owners knew the facility would need a lot of work to bring it up to company standards.

The mill had passed through a number of owners, but "there hasn't been a lot of money put into that facility since Georgia-Pacific owned it in the 1960s," president Steve Swanson said.

That was before the prolonged slump in the national housing market, the unprecedented downturn in lumber consumption, and the national financial crisis, which helped push the country into recession.
