Brad Egbert was in for a tongue-lashing. After getting home from golf practice at Sheldon High School, he realized he had left his home's garage door open for more than an hour, exposing vehicles and valuables to passing opportunists.

"We were glad nothing got stolen," said Brad's father, David Egbert, describing the incident that took place about two years ago.

It turns out the family was prematurely optimistic. While the garage door was open, someone had snuck in and snatched the remote-control opener from Brad's vehicle. That night, David Egbert woke up to the noise of a car engine.

"I looked out just in time to see Brad's car driving away," he said.
