Materializing Gender in Early Modern English Literature and Culture extends the current interest in everyday material objects into four very specific areas that help to illuminate the conceptual field of gender and the social and discursive practices in and through which it operated. Handkerchiefs (chapter 1), codpieces (chapter 2), beards (chapter 3), and hair (chapter 4) are regarded as accessories that have a prosthetic value and 'materialized specific forms of masculine and feminine identity' (p. 12).
