Ancient Privileges discusses Germanic law and the editing of Beowulf, two subjects with more in common than might be thought. Both were dominated by nineteenth-century Germans, who often saw them in the distorting mirror of romantic nationalism. Jurasinski sets out to remove that glass, claiming that it misrepresents law and poetry alike, for all the 'aura of objectivity' (p. 3) that philologists claim for themselves.
