Roger Pielke, Jr., a frequent commentator on and analyst of science policy issues, has written a generally valuable and occasionally provocative book analyzing the role of scientists in the formulation of policy on science- and technology-related issues. Pielke is a Professor in the Environmental Studies Program of the University of Colorado and a Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), a joint environmental research institute of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the University of Colorado and other institutions. At CIRES he was director of the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research for a number of years and has published widely on a variety of science policy issues, especially those dealing with environmental controversies. In general, he is an advocate of being crystal clear on the validity of the evidence in policy debates and he generally worries that scientific participants often have policy preferences that affect their policy recommendations.
