Since its inception almost forty years ago, Asian American literary studies has so far understandably concentrated on various strategies of legitimation. These have included the historical recovery of texts by people of Asian descent in the US, the critique of dominant cultural views of Asian American expression, and the explication of and vigorous advocacy for works by Asian American writers. As crucially important as these efforts have been, they have focused almost exclusively on prose narrative, rather than poetry, in the discussion and theorization of Asian American literary production. This has led to an emphasis on the socio-political importance of thematic content rather than a critical examination of different formal strategies of cultural depiction.
