I awaken Friday and my aching body feels as if it is channeling the nightmare I just had: a two-story rogue wave crushing me while I'm sitting on the beach at Yachats reading "Lonesome Dove."

But, no, then I remember: I played in a Turkey Bowl football game the day before.

At age 54, I was once again the oldest player. I am not a sore loser. I am sore, period.

And as I drive to work - wincing with each depressing of the clutch - I keep thinking of those lines from Fleetwood Mac's song "Landslide": I've been afraid...
