This gastronomic paradise--home to Paul Bocuse and potatoes Lyonnaise--also boasts one of the world's greatest dance festivals. The 13th edition, aptly called "Retour en avant," or "Past Forward," served as a showcase for 42 companies from 19 countries. Under Guy Darmet's artistic direction--and with a budget of nearly $10 million--54 works were performed, including 15 world premieres, many new European works, and several historical reconstructions.

The mind boggled and the heart soared as this festival, in its 25th year, played host to more than 84,000 spectators. Dance was everywhere, with children's shows, free outdoor public performances, and the traditional defile, a festive parade of 4,500, drawing crowds estimated at 350,000, adding icing to this decidedly French--yet universally beloved--gateau.
