Benefit consultants estimate that consumer-directed health plans will account for 20 percent of the market by 2005, and while Michigan companies are starting to ask about them, few are offering the plans yet.

The National Center for Policy Analysis in Washington reports that less than 1 percent of those covered by employer-provided insurance are enrolled in such plans.

Dennis James, an independent insurance agent at Various Insurance Planning in Troy, said he's aware of only a handful of Michigan companies that have added the high-premium plans to their offerings.

Flint-based Citizens Bank just added consumer-directed plans to its employees' health-plan options.
