Cardiac care centers earn prestige and profits for hospitals. So it's no wonder that they've become popular additions in Southeast Michigan.

As the number of centers in the area providing angioplasty and open-heart procedures has increased, they've become political hot buttons.

The argument over how many cardiac centers Southeast Michigan needs isn't new. But it's expected to get more attention this year as more hospitals pursue new cardiac programs and others begin to hit the state-set deadline for volume limits.

William Beaumont Hospital in Troy launched its open-heart center this year. Crittenton Hospital and Medical Center in Rochester Hills plans to open its program later this year. Osteopathic hospitals such as Garden City Hospital and Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills are pursuing the addition of emergency angioplasty services without open-heart surgery.

St. John Macomb Hospital's open-heart program is just two years old and has until next year to meet state-set volume levels. St. Joseph Mercy Macomb hits its three-year mark this August.
