Rex Schlaybaugh Jr., chairman and CEO of Dykema Gossett P.L.L.C., has been described as a "lawyer's lawyer'' by a business partner.

But he really has an entrepreneur's heart.

In less than two years at the helm, Schlaybaugh, 55, has convinced partners to take business risks that shake the 78-year-old law firm from the realm of the stodgy.

* Dykema last month announced the acquisition of a Chicago-based litigation firm with 78 lawyers, a move that some competitors consider risky for Detroit's second-largest law firm.

While the acquisition brings Dykema revenue to $140 million, putting it among the top 150 largest firms nationally, Dykema has no experience managing a large out-of-state branch.

* Last summer, Dykema took a bold step to strengthen its litigation practice by adding 14 lawyers from a Bloomfield Hills firm. The move boosted litigation but cost the firm three of its top bankruptcy attorneys, who left because of conflicts created by the business brought by the trial lawyers.
