Founded and edited by Professor Henry J (Jack) Cowan from 1958 through 2005, the Architectural Science Review was the first, and continues to be the leading international peer-reviewed journal devoted to architectural science, technology and the built environment. From the time of it's founding, ASR has published original research papers and book reviews in all areas of architectural science including building science and technology, the environmental sciences, environmental sustainability, structures and materials, acoustics, illumination, building physics, building services, building climatology, building economics and the social sciences of architecture and the built environment. Since 2006, we have also published invited review papers, shorter research notes, abstracts of PhD dissertations and theses, and letters to the editor, and, as announced in the December 2007 issue (Vol 50, No 4), we issued a call for occasional special issues on topics of central importance to the field.

The journal has been the benchmark in the field, and has played a formative role over its 50+ years in shaping the scientific content of the field. As Professor Cowan once told me, architectural science was not just about architectural technology and building science, it was about all things architectural studied scientifically. My colleagues and I at the journal could not agree more. Together we have devoted the journal to building science and technology and to all areas of architecture studied scientifically. At the same time, I have tried to maintain the affirmative action of my predecessor; ASR continues to encourage submissions from all countries and is proud that many authors from the developing world are able to publish their first scientific papers in the pages of ASR.
