RESURRECTION EYES WEST SUBURBAN

Resurrection Health Care and West Suburban Hospital Medical Center are discussing a takeover of the financially ailing Oak Park hospital by the Catholic hospital system. West Suburban, which has been losing money since 1999, has failed in previous attempts to negotiate a merger that would solve its financial problems. Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital declined an overture from West Suburban last November. A merger with Loyola University Medical Center four years ago broke down over the issue of reproductive services-including contraceptive counseling and elective sterilization-provided by West Suburban. The same issue is a potential roadblock to a combination with Resurrection, but continuing money woes apparently have made West Suburban willing to reconsider affiliating with a Catholic network. Resurrection, an eight-hospital chain with most of its facilities on the North Side and in the north, northwest and west suburbs, ended reproductive services at Westlake Hospital after taking over the Melrose Park institution in 1998. Spokeswomen for West Suburban and Resurrection declined to comment on talk of a merger.
