CORVALLIS - Today brings the 112th edition of the Civil War, and in the previous 111 chapters there has been only one occasion in which both participants were ranked. In a matchup of schools whose fortunes have blossomed only in the past decade or two, the entirety of the rivalry might have been most aptly personified by the version that took place 25 years ago, a 0-0 tie.

This evening in Corvallis, the number of games in which both Oregon and Oregon State were ranked will double. When the Civil War kicks off just after 4 p.m. in Reser Stadium, the Ducks will be ranked No. 19 and playing for a Holiday Bowl berth. The Beavers are ranked No. 17, and with a win would clinch that most precious of Pac-10 laurels, a Rose Bowl berth.

"It's been kind of building toward this, and everybody's maintained their positions pretty well," OSU coach Mike Riley said. "The Civil War is always a great game, but this has got some added stuff that makes it special."
