Q What is the history of Dockery Farms?

A--Mr. Will Dockery came to the Mississippi Delta in the 1880s. He purchased and cleared land, to raise cotton. As he pursued this further, the more people came to the Delta to help him, and others like Mr. Dockery. He began to develop what is known as Dockery Farms. He set up a commissary, a doctor's office, schools and churches. It was just a self-contained community including its own railroad depot.

Q--What is going on now with Dockery Farms, and how were you drawn to this project?

A--About 5 years ago, the Dockery family wanted to begin to repair the site that a great many blues enthusiasts and historians refer to as the 'birthplace of the blues.' So, they poured the foundation, began to solicit funds and work on plans to restore that site not just for tourists, but so that it could be an academic site to cover. They wanted it to...
