Introduction to the special issue on the cognitive neuroscience of giftedness.

Welcome to this special issue on the cognitive neuroscience of giftedness. The articles in this issue span from investigating relationships between brain structure and human intelligence, neuropsychological profiles of savants, functional brain patterns of mathematical processing in gifted adolescents, and functional brain patterns of fluid analogizing to a proposed, expanded model for locating studies of twice-exceptional individuals within medical models of disability. Each of these articles represents one or more important pieces of work that comment on the biological nature of ability and performance.

While the number of individuals who could contribute to this topic from a primary source point of view are few, there is much ground to cover in this emerging field. Consequently, due to an interaction between the amount of material presented by the contributing authors and publishing requirements set forth by the journal, this special issue will span two issues (summer and fall publications). Papers stemming from neuroimaging data that are addressed in the context of the manuscript are incorporated in the first volume (contributions from John Geake, Richard Haier and Rex Jung, Michael O'Boyle, and myself, with additional comments by Robert Sternberg). The goal of the first part of the special issue is to present a primer for better understanding the methods and limitations of neuroimaging. Papers presenting large behavioral, neuropsychological, and theoretical paradigms of the cognitive neuroscience of giftedness will be included in the fall issue (contributions from Gregory Wallace, and Jeff Gilger and George Hynd). These two articles are significant in their depth and are thought-provoking pieces that will adjust and expand the direction of future inquiry into the nature of human ability and potential.
