This book is a vital resource for anyone involved in resolving intrastate conflict--parties to the conflict, negotiators, mediators, third parties, and civil society. Arduously negotiated peace agreements are merely the beginning of the end of conflict. Reordering political and economic structures and relationships among elements of society requires monitoring, dispute resolution mechanisms and continual adjustments to adapt to new developments.

Most conflicts since the cold war are within nations, between governments representing majority groups and ethnic, religious or disadvantaged minorities. This book draws upon discussions facilitated by the non-profit organization Kreddha, an international peace council for states, peoples and minorities, and the Centro UNESCO de Catalunya. Editor and Kreddha Director of Dialogue Facilitation Miek Boltjes introduces the perspectives of a diverse group of practitioners experienced in intrastate peace processes in her comprehensive opening chapter. Providing an overview on concepts, definitions and "reasons for non-implementation of intrastate peace agreements," she summarizes the practitioners' findings from over fifty peace processes. Ensuing chapters analyze implementation of six specific intrastate peace processes. Other chapters focus on the roles of the UN and international third parties, adjudication of disputes, implementation mechanisms, and the challenges caused by resistance of state authorities to implementing autonomy and self-determination agreements.
