Adolescence: A Selection of Issues

The purpose of this continuing nursing education (CNE) series is to increase the pediatric nurse's understanding about a selection of issues of importance in adolescence.

Adolescence is a period fraught with change, a transition between childhood and adulthood. Although many issues in adolescence have remained the same throughout the years, others, such as the need to address the enormous increase in the number of overweight or obese teenagers, have only in recent years become a priority. Keeping updated on issues that affect adolescents can help pediatric nurses guide adolescents through this exciting but often stormy time.

This CNE series consists of three articles that address adolescent issues. The first article presents findings from a study that examined adolescent stress through the eyes of high-risk teenagers. The second article reports the results of a study that sought to determine the association between overweight and obesity, demographic variables, elevated blood pressure, and frequency of health care referrals in rural adolescents. The third article reviews the literature on overweight in Latino/Hispanic adolescents and offers potential strategies nurses can use to address this health matter most efficaciously.
