Whether the bold geometry of Pilobolus or the elegance of a Petipa pas de deux, partnering is one of dance's most exciting elements. It can be pure, it can be tawdry, it can be transcendent. And for today's dancer, being a good partner is more than a professional asset--it's practically a requirement for getting hired.

At New York City Ballet, for instance, much of the repertory features complex partner work. "Balanchine's choreography was centered on the ballerina, so he made many great pas de deux showcasing her," says NYCB principal Jared Angle. "If you can't partner, you automatically aren't able to do the rep."

What does it take for a successful partnership? "It all boils down to trust," says Tommy Neblett, a modern partnering teacher at Boston Conservatory. Neblett teaches his students to trust each other by blindfolding half the class. He...
