Before the Internet, before globalization, before glasnost, there was the international tour. For previous generations of American balletomanes, it didn't get more exciting than those big three-stop visits: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles. The drumroll in the press, the reporters at the gate, the glittering audience on opening night--it was culture at fever pitch, diplomacy in tutus, pure glamour. And of all the foreign companies that flew in, it didn't get more exotic, dramatic, than those coming from behind the Iron Curtain, the former Soviet Union. Which dancers were listed for the tour, which were actually on the plane, and which would stay here as defectors?
