After a summer dancing at my ballet intensive with a swollen, painful ankle, I finally got a diagnosis: FHL tendonitis. Now I can't dance and have to wear a boot until it recovers. How can I ever improve if I can't work on my technique?

There's no need to panic. So-called "dancer's tendonitis," which affects the flexor hallucis longus tendon, is a common problem in ballet. Every time you relieve from flat foot to pointe, you work the tendon that runs down the inside of the ankle to the big toe.
