Known as "the mother of African dance," Senegalese dancer/choreographer Germaine Acogny directed the Bejart-affiliated school Mudra Afrique in Dakar from 1977 to '82. She then worked with Bejart in Belgium and taught African dance throughout Europe. In '97, with her husband Helmut Vogt, she established the International Centre for Traditional and Contemporary African Dances, L'Ecole des Sables. Her group Compagnie Jant-Bi's collaboration with Kota Yamazaki, Fagaala, a reflection on the Rwandan genocide, won a Bessie award in 2007.
