Back in 1977, American journalism professor John Merrill posited the idea of "existential journalism" as a cure for the anomie he felt pervaded the media.

Within existential journalism, he said, the freedom and responsibility of the individual journalist would counteract the growing impersonality and conformity of the corporate newsroom.

The result, he believed, would be committed, involved journalism practised by reporters dedicated to telling stories that would enlighten and vitalize the community around them.

I wonder if Russell Mills is feeling existential these days, summarily liberated as he has been from his duties as the publisher of the Ottawa Citizen. His newspaper did what it was supposed...
