One effect of the announcement by University of Washington football coach Tyrone Willingham that he will resign at the end of this season is that would-be candidates can't use the "that job's not open" excuse for refusing to comment about their interest, or lack thereof.
Not that they're going to comment anyway, as long as they're gainfully employed somewhere else.
So unless new Washington AD Scott Woodward makes a straight line for Lane Kiffin, the former USC assistant coach who is out of a job after being dumped by the Oakland Raiders - and who professes interest in the UW position - we've got weeks of speculation ahead, whether the potential successors like it or not.
So there was Bryan Burwell, the respected columnist of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, speculating this week on one of the apparent top candidates, Missouri coach Gary Pinkel, a former UW player and assistant coach.
Burwell's take: Pinkel, 56, might not be as interested as some Husky fans would hope.
"The assumption is that if well-heeled University of Washington alums pool their resources together, it will be enough to buy Pinkel's heart and soul back home," Burwell wrote. "But those who think that are probably underestimating the eight-year struggle Pinkel endured to...
