Outside a grocery store in west Eugene, half-empty shopping carts tell stories of stretched budgets and empty wallets:

A mother of eight who can't keep the fridge full.

An aging senior who winces at the price of meat and goes without.

This is what a crumbling economy and dwindling savings looks like: families struggling to find enough to eat. It's a reality that's echoed in the sharp increase of food stamp applications in Lane County.

In the past year, the number of people depending on food stamps has grown by 10 percent - more than six times the county's average increase in recent years.

John Radich, state Department of Human Services manager for Lane County, said he's never seen demand like this.

Nearly 300 new families a month are seeking help, with nearly one in five households using the food stamp program....
