U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith and challenger Jeff Merkley made separate appeals to Lane County audiences Wednesday that urged them to vote in their Senate race as if Barack Obama will be the next president.

With less than a week to go until voting concludes, both candidates are barnstorming the state, rallying their faithful supporters and trying to woo undecided voters through local news coverage.

With Democrat Obama projected by polls to win the presidency over Republican John McCain, both Smith and Merkley made it clear that they're weaving their closing arguments around that likelihood.
