This book is a rich collection of essays that seeks to shed light on some of the forgotten comers of 193 Os cinema in Britain. At the heart of the book is a preoccupation with the so called "quota quickies" that were made in the wake of the Cinematographer's Film Act of 1927, an act which sought to counter American dominance of the British film market by malting it compulsory for cinemas in Britain to show a proportion of British films. This quota system has historically been perceived as a failure because it did not set a minimum cost requirement for the films to be made, which left American studios free to get around...
