It is probably an exaggeration to label Charles Fairfax Murray "the unknown Pre-Raphaelite." Although nowadays his name is probably only familiar to specialists in Victorian art, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Murray was known as an accomplished painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery and, more importantly, as a connoisseur and dealer in English art and Old Masters. Pre-Rephaelitism for Murray was as much a matter of personal association as aesthetic commitment.
