Marina Holmes' only regret about the 2008 back-to-school shopping marathon is that she didn't get to the starting line a little earlier.

"It's fine, but I left everything to the last day, so I pretty much can't find anything," Holmes said Friday, with her shopping basket still only half-full at the Gateway Target store and 7-year-old son Erik trying on his daypack of choice.

Heading into her second full school year with her soon-to-be second-grader, Holmes listed economics as the lesson of the day - as in, downturns in the national and local economies require a little more control over the purse strings than in the past.
