Local Republicans say they are thrilled with Sen. John McCain's choice for a vice presidential running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, which he announced Friday morning at a rally in Dayton, Ohio.

"Well, it came as a surprise to me," said Pat Farr, of Eugene, who is serving as district chief for McCain in the House's 4th District. "But I don't think it's a bad choice by any means."

One benefit is Palin's home state of Alaska, Farr said.

"She represents a really rural state," he said.

"I think that rural people will be impressed by that."
