Having cemented his standing as one of the nation's most esteemed urban schools chiefs, retired Boston School Superintendent Tom Payzant returned to Eugene Thursday to welcome employees of the district he led near the dawn of his 40-year career.

In a keynote address that touched on many hot- button issues confronting educators, Payzant recalled his five years as Eugene's superintendent "wonderful, overall" - despite the fact they ended with the school board prepared to oust him.

Now 67, the Massachusetts-born Payzant arrived in Eugene in 1973, fresh off his first stint as a schools chief in a small Pennsylvania township. He was extraordinarily young by superintendent standards - he'd been a classroom teacher for just two years before being accepted to the Harvard Graduate School of Education's program for would-be administrators.
