Shares in the UK's ReNeuron Holdings have been on the slide after a key drug candidate failed to achieve satisfactory results in two Phase II trials. With the likelihood that the drug will now be discontinued, ReNeuron loses a program which was expected to help fund the group's core stem-cell research activities.

The drug, ReN1869, is a neurin compound, licensed from Denmark's Novo Nordisk in 2000, that was in Phase II development in two indications, diabetic neuropathy and rheumatoid arthritis. The neurin group of compounds affect certain nerve fibers, so-called C-fibers, which transmit pain and inflammation signals.
