This book of prodigious scholarship examines historic and contemporary "Upper North America" from cultural, social, economic, and political cross-border experiences. It contends that Canada and the United States are today, and have historically been, transnational areas of mingled peoples who are interdependent, yet who maintain "allegiance to distinct national political systems and governments" (3), and that disparities are basically variations on themes rather than distinct differences.
