In the wake of the 2007 Consultation Commission on Accommodation Practices Related to Cultural Differences, established by the Quebec government and charged to examine how different groups can be accommodated in the context of a pluralist, democratic, and egalitarian society; books about identities and nationalism are extremely relevant. This one addresses contemporary political issues regarding identities using a comparativist approach, examining questions such as: "Why is nationalism in Quebec portrayed as ethnic and in Scotland as civic? Does nationalism have an impact on political attitudes? Why do people think there are differences regarding political attitudes, even when there are none?" (3). Henderson focuses on the relationship between national identity and political attitudes to argue that "Scotland and Quebec are more similar than not, but that in each case national identity plays a different role in political debates" (3). National identity is posed as the independent variable, while political values, attitudes, and behavior arc shown as dependent variables.
