Stanford law professor Richard Thompson Ford's book The Race Card: How Bluffing about Bias Makes Race Relations Worse decries those who play the race card by claiming race discrimination when it may not really be involved. The tide and much of the book's early discussion make it sound like a right-wing screed attacking antidiscrimination law. Ford seems to want to entice people inclined to that view to read his book and then convince them that, in light of his vision of the law's purpose, the law is justified.

In Ford's view, integration is the central objective and principal justification of antidiscrimination law. In essence, his book is a clever turn on playing the race card: getting the attention of those who tend to think antidiscrimination law is no longer justified but then convincing them that it still is necessary--even if it needs to be reframed.
