Over the summer, an advertisement for air conditioners appeared around Australia, spruiking the company (which shall remain nameless) as 'The world leader in air conditioners: even the Eskimos agree'. This message was emblazoned across the image of an Inuit man standing in front of his igloo on an expanse of solid ice.

This ad, more than anything else, said to me that, despite all the sound and fury about climate change during 2007, despite it being declared the year that 'everything changed', nothing has really changed. Not yet.

The year 2007 was the year the Fourth Assessment Report followed An Inconvenient Truth to the top of the pops and climate science became big news. It was the year Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shared the Nobel Peace Prize. It was the year when Arctic summer ice melt shot so far ahead of projections that scientists brought forward by more than a decade their estimates of when the Artic might be ice free in summer--as soon as 2015 rather than 2030.
